Desexing is a surgical procedure that is frequently performed at Campsie Vet Hospital.
Desexing, also known as castration for males and spaying for females is a surgery that removes the reproductive organs of cats and dogs. In females, the surgery involves the removal of the ovaries and uterus. In males, the surgery involves the removal of the testicles.
The surgery is usually carried out at 6 months of age unless advised otherwise by the vet for medical reasons. It is generally a day surgery that is performed Monday to Friday. Your dog or cat will be required to be dropped off to the hospital in the morning and will be ready for discharge in the afternoon on the same day. Admission and discharge times will be advised at the time of booking your pet’s surgery. Staff will advise if your pet will be required to stay overnight.
Upon discharge, staff will advise you of all post operative instructions for your cat or dog.
It is advised that your dog or cat have a bath the day before surgery if possible. Your pet will be required to have had dinner by 7pm the night before surgery with no more food (treats included) to be given after this time. Water is allowed throughout the night but please remove the water source in the morning.
